Where I serve

Our first year as missionaries we served at Oklahoma State University. For our second and third year we are served at the University of Tulsa. In our fourth year we are here at K-State where I am the Team Director. We are based out of the St. Isidore's on campus, but our team spends a lot of time out on campus with students.

My Story

Alex

On July 8th 2010, my life changed forever.

I heard the words, "for your 18th birthday, you can choose the rehab center you get to go to."

This was my parent's reaction after discovering that the last two years of my junior and senior year of high-school and been filled with drugs and alcohol. Yet even still, my parents met me with unyielding Christ-like mercy when I had finally come clean after a long two years of lies, deceit, and ultimately emptiness. I had nothing to show for my four years of high school except addictive tendencies, shallow relationships, and a now broken relationship with my family.

"I felt alone and undiscovered" - Chris August

But their persistent love and mercy inspired me to look for fulfillment in something deeper. I began to search for deeper answers and insights into my life. I started counseling and quickly began asking my counselor big questions about life and faith. Every answer he gave me went back to Scripture. The Bible seemed to have an answer for everything. I became more and more open to God's presence in my life and I began to search for Him within the Catholic Church where I had been raised.

I started to attend daily Mass and pray the rosary daily with my mom. I went to college sure of who I wanted to become and sure of who I didn't want to become. I began to fall deeper in love with Jesus and His Church.

He taught me how to be free from drugs and alcohol.

He taught me where true happiness comes from.

He taught me who I am and  who I was created to be.

He taught me how to form deep lasting relationships with friends and family.

He taught me a new way of living. He taught me how to love.

Then in my freshmen year I met a beautiful brown eyed girl named Hilary and my life changed forever...

Hilary

Hilary grew up going to many different churches with her mother and siblings growing up. They went to Pentecostal churches, Baptist churches, Assembly of God churches, and many Non-Denominational churches (sometimes held in people's homes). In high school Hilary moved in with her grandpa who had an amazing influence on her. They enjoyed life together spending much of their free time together watching good movies, discussing politics, reading the classics, and experiencing the beauty of life. One day her grandpa asked her,

"Do you want to visit some other churches with me? I want you to have a well rounded view of Christianity."

and so Hilary and her Grandpa visited the Sunday service of nearly every single Christian denomination. The very last church she visited was the Catholic Church. She didn't know much about the Church but was instantly moved by the devotion and reverence that was there. Intrigued and wanting to know more her and her grandpa began attending mass every Sunday for over a year. After a year she wanted to attend RCIA to learn more about the Church. After a nearly two year journey her a her grandpa both entered into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church through confirmation on April 3, 2010. Soon after she left for college at the University of Oklahoma where she quickly got involved with the campus ministry at St. Thomas More in Norman, Oklahoma.

Our Story

Hilary and I met our Freshmen Year at the University of Oklahoma in a class we had together. We didn't really start talking to each other until we saw each other at mass one Sunday and realized that we were both Catholic. We started our relationship out as friends who wanted to grow deeper in the faith and were looking to surround ourselves with like-minded people. We struggled to find our place in the STM community early on and struggled with many of the empty promises that college life falsely offers. Thankfully the Lord blessed us with Focus missionaries during our Junior year. These missionaries walked with us the next two years of college and helped us encounter Jesus as well as build a community of people who would become lifelong friends. These missionaries helped us to purify our relationship and grow our love for each other through our love for Jesus. We got engaged during our senior year and got married soon after graduation. After graduating we looked back at our time in college and asked ourselves,

"What has been the most fulfilling and life changing thing we've been involved with since starting college? Our answer was evangelizing and involvement with FOCUS."

After reflecting on this, we dropped our nets and followed Jesus back onto the college campus.

Your Impact

When we answered the call to join FOCUS, we made the decision to put our "careers" on hold to be able to give of ourselves fully to college students in need. In order to make a gift of ourselves, our time, and our energy we fully rely on the spiritual and financial support of mission partners to help us in this mission. We have already been so blessed with amazing mission partners so far, but our financial goals have increased as we begin to start a family. If you are interested in partnering with us, please let me know by contacting me at [email protected] or calling/texting me at 405-823-8953. We would love to talk with you over the phone and if possible schedule an appointment meet with you in person. The work that is being done in FOCUS is not only changing lives but leaving a legacy for generations to come. We aren't spectacular because the work that we do, what truly is spectacular is that it is made possible by the more than 60 families that have supported us over the last two years. Please join these families as our mission partners and come join us on mission! God Bless You.
