Emily Martinez

“I used to pray that God would feed the hungry, or do this or that, but now I pray that he will guide me to do whatever I'm supposed to do, what I can do. I used to pray for answers, but now I'm praying for strength. I used to believe that prayer changed things, but now I know that prayer changes us and we change things.”
-Saint Mother Teresa

Where I serve

I am on the national FOCUS Recruitment team! I manage our hiring goals in the East Region! What a gift it has been to speak at campuses from across the country, from UCLA to NYU, about what FOCUS is doing in the church for young people. I get to inspire students everyday to be missionaries, with FOCUS or without FOCUS. I challenge them to set the faith on fire and to continue to make it come alive. I believe the future of FOCUS is in the hands of our future missionaries and I am honored to help find them, encourage them, and hire them! Thank you so much for all of your support and prayers!

My Story

I grew up in Nebraska and attended UNL as a Theatre Performance major. With the help of a FOCUS missionary and the blessing of being cast as Joan of Arc, I discovered what it meant to have a personal relationship with Christ and it changed everything. With grad school in England on the table, becoming a missionary was not in my plans. God is good and knows us far better than we know ourselves. Now my heart is set on sharing the love Christ has given me through art and genuine encounters! Check out my blog here!

Your Impact

I am a part of a truly beautiful and thriving organization. FOCUS changed my life in college. Through the work of FOCUS missionaries, I found my home in the Church again. There was a moment my senior year when I thought there was no way FOCUS could help me or challenge me more that it already had. And then I because a missionary.

My three years as a missionary within the FOCUS community have called me to deeper virtue, deeper love, and a deeper trust in our Lord. Together as missionaries, we call each other, as well as our students, to look up rather than look down in the midst of hardship. We hold each other accountable to daily prayer, daily Mass, to the sacraments, to patience, and to sharing the joy that is within us.

I honestly cannot believe the person I am becoming, and so much of it is thanks to my fellow missionaries, the students, and my amazing mission partners. These beautiful people are letting the Holy Spirit work through them in a way that’s changing our culture. Tolkien said, “Little by little, one travels far.” I think this reigns true for FOCUS, its missionaries, and it's supporters.
