Where I serve

Thank you for following me on my mission at Seton Hall University! With a passion for sports and most importantly to share God's love, I have an awesome opportunity to work with student-athletes (through Varsity Catholic) to help them become the best they can be both on and off the field!

My Story

Baseball has been a part of my life ever since I can remember. As the son of a former professional baseball player, my dream was always to make it to the bigs someday, and use that platform to tell others about the love of God. When God granted me my dream of playing Division 1 baseball with my older brother Nick at the University of Maine,  also the alma mater of my parents, I thought this was His perfect plan all playing out. Little did I ever expect that the one thing that always came so natural and easy to me would become the most discouraging and devastating part of my life. As a freshman at UMaine, I was redshirted, therefore not able to compete when the season came around in spring. This meant not traveling with the team, not sharing the experiences with my teammates and most importantly not fulfilling the high expectations I placed on myself going into college. For many years leading up to my collegiate career I wrapped a large part of my identity in the success I found on the baseball field. When I no longer had this, I felt lost, worthless, anxious, and embarrassed. I felt like I had let people down and would be looked at differently. It was during this time, God stepped up to the plate in a profound way and gave me opportunities to speak to elementary and middle school students about my faith in him, despite my baseball career not going the way I had intended. While I was struggling on the baseball side of life, I was flourishing in my faith life. In the winter of my sophomore year, my brother Nick and I were featured in a Catholic magazine as UMaine baseball players where the center of attention was solely our faith in God.

Through telling others about the joy and peace God brings when He is at the center of our lives, I, myself realized that for a long time I hadn't put Him in the center of mine. I eventually transferred from UMaine after my sophomore year in pursuit of continuing my baseball career, but was devastated at the thought of never playing with my brother Nick again. Relying on summer ball to get recruited to a new school I had high hopes. However, I broke my wrist the first week of the summer season and was out for the remainder of it. At that point I surrendered my career to God and said if you don't want me to play anymore, I will give it up for you. Just when I thought all was lost and my career was over, my brother Nick was approached by an assistant Coach from Anderson University in South Carolina after his summer ball game. In their conversation Nick told this Coach that his brother, Garrett was looking to transfer. With God's grace I ended up receiving a scholarship to play at Anderson without ever being seen play. What was even cooler was that after Nick graduated from Maine that year, he transferred down to Anderson for grad school so we could play his last year of baseball together. In our final home game as teammates, we helped our team reach the conference tournament as I hit a double with 2 outs in the last inning, and Nick followed with a walk off single to bring me home! I never could've wrote this script but God knew what he needed to do reveal my true identity as His son, and to trust His way in all circumstances! Oh, and as far as the dream of getting drafted...I like to say God drafted me as a missionary, to be a part of the greatest team I could ever play for.

"Blessed are those who persevere under trial, for having stood the test, they will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love Him"

 James 1:12

As a missionary, my greatest desire is to lead all students to Christ. My life has been transformed by Jesus and I want nothing more than to bring this joy to others and introduce them to the life-changing message of the Gospel. In His ministry on earth, Jesus humbled Himself to meet us on our level, taking on our humanity, and spent most of His time investing deeply in a few. I look to Jesus’ own example to find the best method of reaching the world. I've been constantly amazed by the different souls I've encountered on campus.

Your Impact

When I answered the call to join FOCUS, I made the decision to rely on the spiritual and financial support of mission partners to help me through this mission. I've been blessed with the most amazing people who have journeyed with me as I serve on campus. If you are interested in partnering with me, please let me know of the best way to reach you and I will schedule an appointment. I'd be honored to share this mission with you.
