2015 - 2017: Columbia University, New York City

In addition to leading Bible studies and mentoring students, you can find me with a camera in hand exploring. I hope to share with you a slice of this life through my photos!

My Story

I graduated from Harvard University in 2015 on scholarship, majoring in Earth and Planetary Science.  And I was eager to apply this skill set to environmental policy making. However, over the course of college, I felt there was a certain depth missing from my friendships, a particular delight missing from life.  Authentic relationships were so hard to develop and I didn't know why.  And oddly, resolving this problem began to motivate me more than environmental activism, my passion.

And I felt bad. Were human relationships really that important if we weren't going to have a planet to live on?

It was only when I met young people living out their Catholic faith joyfully and to the full that I realized that we were made for deep, intimate relationship.  My eyes were opened to the immense spiritual hunger in our world, especially among young people.  My experience at Harvard confirms this. Despite being the wealthiest university in the world, there was a pervading darkness.  Depression and suicide were common.

This was the hunger I was experiencing, and the only solution I found was the love of Christ, through the intentional investment of time and love from the missionaries at Harvard.  I now live with a real joy and freedom like never before.

As a Catholic I believe in a God who is Love, who made us to be in relationship with himself for eternity. So many people, like me back at Harvard, do not know this love and that they can have it. You can have it.

And college is such a pivotal time to realize this -- the decisions made here determine the course of life for many people.

As a missionary, my greatest desire is to lead all students to Christ. My life has been transformed by Jesus and I want nothing more than to bring this joy to others and introduce them to the life-changing message of the Gospel. In His ministry on earth, Jesus humbled Himself to meet us on our level, taking on our humanity, and spent most of His time investing deeply in a few. I look to Jesus’ own example to find the best method of reaching the world. I've been constantly amazed by the different souls I've encountered on campus.

Bl. Mother Theresa once said:  "You in the West have the spiritually poorest of the poor much more than you have physically poor people. Very often among the rich there are very, very spiritually poor people."  We need to let Jesus relieve our hunger. All else will take care of itself.

Your Impact

When I answered the call to join FOCUS, I made the decision to rely on the spiritual and financial support of mission partners to help me through this mission. I've been blessed with the most amazing people who have journeyed with me as I serve on campus. If you would like to partner with me, please let me know of the best way to reach you and I will schedule an appointment. I'd be honored to share this mission with you.
