Where I serve

This year I will be taking my talents to Boca Raton, Florida where I will be a second year missionary and team director at Florida Atlantic University. With a large campus of 30,000 students found in the hot and sunny Florida sun, you’ll be finding me hanging out at the Catholic Newman Lounge, [attempting] to play a game of basketball or ultimate Frisbee, or just having a good time with my teammates and students!

My Story

I was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago by two wonderful parents, immigrants from the Philippines, along with my older sister and younger brother, both four years apart! I was very fortunate enough to have 13 years’ worth of Catholic education to learn and grow in knowledge of my faith. I was also heavily involved in leadership with the youth ministry of my parish St. Isidore. With a seemingly firm foundation, I decided to test my limits and push my comfort zone.

With that in mind, I decided to attend the large setting of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I remained involved and lived for two years at St. John’s Catholic Newman Center participating in retreats and a FOCUS Bible Study, but I wanted to branch out even more so I joined the Philippine Student Association (PSA) to get in touch with my culture. I did just that and grew in leadership there, but along with my academics, friends, and faith, PSA seemed like another box that I had to carry and balance – I seemed to lose who I truly was in the commitments and involvement. It was in attending the FOCUS SEEK Conference in Orlando in 2013 where the Lord really revealed to me that my identity shouldn’t be rooted in what I do or how others view me, but should be rooted in Him. I am a beloved son of God the Father and that’s all that really mattered. Everything that I did was an opportunity to grow closer to Him and draw others to Him as well. I returned to the conference with a greater sense of purpose and authentic joy, desiring to share my faith, and even led me to leading a Bible study with my friends in PSA.

As college continued I became more involved in PSA and thus was able to see first-hand the dominant college culture, and at points I fell victim to it, leading to periods of emptiness in my own faith life. But the more I returned back to God and relied on my missionaries and the community at Newman, the more I realized that without our efforts as Catholics, people may never know that they are longed for by a loving, compassionate God - that it is our responsibility to serve those who seek true joy and fulfillment, which can only be found in Christ. After more discernment and prayer, this mission to serve others came to light when the Lord called me to serve as a missionary with FOCUS, to really “go and make disciples of all nations” in a very tangible way.

I ask that as I continue on in following Christ’s call to serve on mission, you may find through prayer how He is particularly calling you to serve Him and His Church.

Your Impact

We are all called by Christ to serve on mission. It has been such a blessing to impact the college campus, but even more to share it with others!

When I answered the call to join FOCUS, I made the decision to rely on the spiritual and financial support of mission partners to help me through this mission. I've been blessed with the most amazing people who have journeyed with me as I serve on campus. If you are interested in partnering with me, please let me know of the best way to reach you so we can talk. I'd be honored to share this mission with you.
