Hey! My name's Spencer. I'm a FOCUS missionary.
Hey! My name's Spencer. I'm a FOCUS missionary.
God has called me to serve college students at SDSU! You'll typically find me working out, hanging out at the university cafe ( I like to EAT), the Newman Center, playing sports with students.
Before joining FOCUS, I was a middle school math teacher and high school soccer and track coach of three years at Milan, Indiana. I truly enjoyed working with students and athletes! I loved striving to help them learn strong values in school and in sports. I was in a very unique place, where I could go to daily mass before teaching at a public school and I had several opportunities to work with the youth group, Verso L'alto (Catholic Adult Group), help with Sunday school, and FCA.
I first heard about FOCUS on a date! Yep! I had placed myself on Catholic Match in hopes of finding my future spouse. While on a date with a great girl, we were talking about faith based things and, she asked me if I had ever heard of FOCUS? I had not, so she proceeded to tell me a little bit about it. And then later said something like “I think you should look into FOCUS Spencer, pray about it, I think God might be calling you to be a FOCUS missionary.”
Now, I wish I could say that I went home, looked it up with an open heart and prayed about it. But that is not what I did. After hearing that Missionaries have to fundraise and invite people to join their support team, I definitely knew this was not the thing for me. I have always been terrible at selling and fundraising things because It has always made me uncomfortable to ask for help, I prefer to be independent and make my own way. Plus there was a one year dating fast, and I was not wanting to put off finding my future wife any longer.
Well guess what?? The following weekend after Sunday Mass a FOCUS missionary came to my home parish to talk about FOCUS. I should have realized then and there that God was calling me, but I was asking the Lord, please don’t call me into something like this away from my life and career that was comfortable. I decided to not be fearful and thought I could at least make conversation with him after mass.
I met with him again for lunch a couple months later and he encouraged me to go to a recruitment weekend and knowing my heart was far from being open to be a missionary, he said that these weekends aren’t only for discerning FOCUS but can help discern other big decisions as well. I did not give a definite yes about the weekend but said I would think and pray about it. Well I ended up signing up for the recruitment weekend 10 min before the deadline! Ya, I was still dragging my feet big time!
I went to the weekend very much kidding myself that I was actually open to becoming a missionary, I knew I would respectfully decline if they offered me a position. In my heart I was going to discern other things. Well over the course of the weekend the Holy Spirit was at work! I learned that over a startling 80% of students who go to College completely fall away from practicing and living their Catholic Faith. I was asked a question in small groups, “When is the last time you discipled or brought someone into relationship with Jesus Christ or back to the fullness of the Catholic Faith?”. I was convicted to the max. I felt a strong desire that had been in my heart for years to serve and bring people to the Joy of living the Gospel. But I felt so inadequate and had no idea how to best bring people into relationship with our Lord and our Faith. I quickly began to learn that FOCUS equips missionary’s to do just that in a radical, humble, and effective way. I was blown away, the method of win, build, and send to allow the Lord to work in and through spiritual multiplication to bring back a culture of truth and love. By the end of the weekend I was practically begging the Lord to ask me to be a FOCUS missionary. I wanted nothing more than to do the Lord’s will, to walk with others on a path that leads to holiness, happiness and most importantly Heaven!
Two weeks later when I received the call and was asked to be a FOCUS missionary, this time finally, I was willing to answer the Lord with a resounding YES!!! It’s funny how the Lord works! I was not wanting to let go of the joys of teaching students and working with athletes. Now my full time mission is to share with students and athletes the authentic joy of living the Gospel message through FOCUS and Varsity Catholic.
When I answered the call to join FOCUS, I made the decision to rely on the spiritual and financial support of mission partners to help me through this mission. If you are interested in partnering with me, please let me know of the best way to reach you and I will schedule an appointment. I'd be honored to share this mission with you.

We encounter God in an intimate relationship through daily prayer, the sacraments and the Scriptures.
By building genuine friendships, we meet students on a deeper level.
We teach students how to share the gospel, who in turn teach other students how to pass it on …
