Spiritual Impact

“Are you living your lives in a way that opens up space for the Spirit in the midst of a world that wants to forget God, or even rejects him in the name of a falsely-conceived freedom? How are you using the gifts you have been given, the ‘power’ which the Holy Spirit is even now prepared to release within you? What legacy will you leave to young people yet to come? What difference will you make?”
~Pope Benedict XVI

WHO WE ARE

Who we are: FOCUS, the Fellowship of Catholic University Students, is a national outreach that invites college students into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church, inspiring and equipping them for a lifetime of Christ-centered evangelization, discipleship, and friendships in which they lead others to do the same.

FOCUS Spiritual Development is an apostolate of FOCUS that is specifically designed to assist and strengthen the missionaries and students spiritually in their work and faith with God.

“Let us never forget this, because the Spirit of the Lord always remembers every individual, and wishes, particularly through you young people, to “stir up the wind and fire” of a new Pentecost in the world.”
                                    ~ Pope Benedict XVI

Our vision: FOCUS spiritual development program is designed to encourage, challenge, and inspire missionaries and students to experience the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, understand spiritual warfare and live the soul of the apostolate in their lives.  This program ultimately leads to greater zeal for missionaries to evangelize on campus as they battle tirelessly for the salvation of souls.  It is our hope that this program will augment the spiritual aspect of the Leadership Foundations program designed by the FOCUS Formation and Curriculum Team.

“The outpouring of Christ’s Spirit upon humanity is a pledge of hope and deliverance from everything that impoverishes us. It gives the blind new sight; it sets the downtrodden free, and it creates unity in and through diversity (cf. Lk 4:18-19; Is 61:1-2). This power can create a new world: it can renew the face of the earth (cf. Ps 104:30)!
                                    ~ Pope Benedict XVI

Our mission:  To have FOCUS missionaries and students who are spiritually mature, on fire for their faith, equipped, and ready for winning students over to the love of Jesus Christ and His Church. We hope that it will address some of the spiritual and emotional needs of the missionaries and empower them to help others as well.  This program will serve as a power-house for FOCUS national and on-campus missionaries.

Dr. Howard Hendricks, a distinguished professor and chairman of the Center for Christian Leadership at Dallas Theological Seminary, said in his book entitled Teaching to Change LIVES, “If you give students only the product – which is what we tend to specialize in – you limit them by your own limitations.  But give them the process, and you launch them on a path with no limitations.  They can, in fact, exceed you and become more effective than you.”  This is the philosophy behind the boot-camps!

WHY SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:

  1. Spiritual Desert is Spreading – Need for Spiritual Reawakening:
    • “We need spiritual reawakening.”
~Curtis Martin, (2007 Veteran staff meeting in Atchison, KS)
    • “The world needs this renewal!  In so many of our societies, side by side with material prosperity, a spiritual desert is spreading: an interior emptiness, an unnamed fear, a quiet sense of despair.”
~Pope Benedict XVI, last homily at the World Youth Day, Sydney, 2008
    • “We need someone to utter ‘a roar’ over the body of Holy Church, lusty enough to wake up the children lying asleep within her.”
                          ~ St. Catherine of Siena
  2. We wrestle not against Flesh and Blood – Need to Learn about Spiritual Warfare
    • “What are the Church’s greatest needs at the present time? Don’t be surprised at our answer and don’t write it off as simplistic or even superstitious: one of the Church’s greatest needs is to be defended against the evil we call the Devil.”
~ Pope Paul VI, General Audience November 15, 1972
    • “The evil which exists in the world is the result and effect of an attack upon us and our society by a dark hostile agent, the devil… It is very important to return to a study of Catholic teaching on the devil and the influence he is able to wield, but nowadays, little attention is paid it.”
~ Pope Paul VI, General Audience November 15, 1972
    • “For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens.”
                          ~ Eph.6:12
  3. Prayer and the New Evangelization – Need to Learn about Intercessory Prayer
    • “Apostolic and missionary fruitfulness is not principally due to programmes and pastoral methods that are cleverly drawn up and “efficient”, but is the result of the community’s constant prayer” (cf. Evangelii Nuntiandi, 75).
                          ~ Pope Paul VI
    • “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercession be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way. This is good, and it is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior…”
                          ~ 1 Tim. 2:1-3.
    • “Our interior life ought to be the stem, filled with vigorous sap, of which our works are the flowers. The soul of an apostle – it should be flooded first of all with light, and inflamed with love, so that, reflecting that heat, it may enlighten and give warmth to other souls.”
                          ~ Dom Jean-Baptiste Chautard, O.C.S.O
