In his Lenten address this year, Pope Francis explores Luke’s Gospel to help us prepare for our spiritual journey. He recounts Jesus’ parable of the poor man, Lazarus, and the unnamed rich man, who both receive different rewards after death. While the rich man’s eternal suffering warns us to guard against the love of money, vanity and pride, Lazarus’ earthly suffering carries a stronger message. Lazarus reminds us that others are a gift, and we are called to recognize the inherent value of others.
“Lent is a favourable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ,” he said. “Each life that we encounter is a gift deserving acceptance, respect and love.”
Encounter & Share, a new Lenten experience presented by FOCUS, is your opportunity to deepen your individual encounter with God and to share the Lenten call to repentance and conversion with others.
Every Sunday in Lent, FOCUS will host Facebook Live events with Catholic speakers at 9 p.m. ET, including Dr. Edward Sri, Sr. Miriam James Heidland, Jennifer Fulwiler and more. We’ll explore Lenten topics such as fasting, confession, almsgiving and prayer — and you’ll be free to jump into the conversation with your own questions for the speakers, too!
During the rest of the week, keep an eye on your Facebook feed for more inspiring and practical resources. Lent is everyone’s chance to reexamine their life, reject sinful ways and reignite their relationship with God. You can help others along on their Lenten journey by clicking “Share” and passing along these resources to your Facebook friends.
“Lent is the
favourable season for renewing our encounter with Christ, living in his word,
in the sacraments and in our neighbor,” Pope Francis tells us. “May the Holy
Spirit lead us on a true journey of conversion, so that we can rediscover the
gift of God’s word, be purified of the sin that blinds us, and serve Christ
present in our brothers and sisters in need.
Don’t forget: Join us on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET for Encounter & Share’s Facebook Live events!
