When the Lord calls you to do something, do you run from the call, do you ask Him to tweak it, or do you accept it willingly? I chose the second option when I was a senior in high school. In prayer, the Lord very suddenly asked me to be a missionary after having gone on a very impactful retreat. At the retreat, my friend was experiencing doubts regarding her faith and during a time of meditation, He told me, “Tell her that I love her. So much.” The Lord showed me that He created me to be a vessel of His love and to help others know that He exists.
When He asked me to be a missionary my senior year, I told Him, “Ok, but only if I can be in college while doing it.” My freshman year passed and when sophomore year came along, FOCUS missionaries came to my campus, Central Michigan University, for the first time ever. Amy Pica, one of the missionaries, and I built a friendship. Our friendship was rooted in our love for Christ. This relationship was what I call a "Godcidence" because with God, there are no coincidences. He put FOCUS and Amy in my life for a very intentional reason. My prayer life and intimacy with the Lord began to blossom as Amy taught me how to pray routinely, making a daily commitment to the Lord. She taught me the tools I needed to begin a bible study of my own. The Lord prompted me through Amy to invite my friends into a discovery of who Jesus is and His Love for them. I began to allow myself to be more confident in the Lord and vulnerable with the women in my life. Amy was modeling this to me in the sharing of her own life, just as Christ modeled it for us in His vulnerability with His disciples. The Lord was calling me to give more of myself and to make Him the center of everything in my life.
The Holy Spirit continued to work on my heart my junior year, prompting me to give up the career plans that I had and opening me up to the dream job that would fulfill some my deepest desires. I began to realize that although I loved the academic side of my major, Communication Disorders (Speech Therapy) and loved the one-on-one giving of myself to clients I was helping, I was not fulfilled by this work. Ever so lovingly, the Holy Spirit has been revealing to me these past few years that I desire and was created to have an eternal effect, not just a temporal, or earthly effect, on the world through my career. He did this with the most perfect timing, taking it slowly so that I would be able to submit to His Will without freaking out that I was not in control. Submission to the Lord's Will is a daily choice that is easier to make when invoking the Holy Spirit; He has lead me to today.
Now, I am a FOCUS Missionary; I have chosen that third option and have joyously answered His call for me. I am so excited to fall more in love with Jesus alongside the men and women I meet on the campus of Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI, talking to Him together, receiving the Sacraments together, and learning more about Him and His Church together, equipping them for a lifelong relationship with Him. All praise to God, who knew I needed certain people and experiences in my life as impetuses in my journey toward this vocation of ministry through FOCUS. It would be such a blessing to me if you could pray for any students whom I will encounter this year, and for me to have an open, obedient heart as He prompts me.
We encounter God in an intimate relationship through daily prayer, the sacraments and the Scriptures.
By building genuine friendships, we meet students on a deeper level.
We teach students how to share the gospel, who in turn teach other students how to pass it on …
