Where I serve

God has called me to serve at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette! For those who may not be aware, UL is the only campus with a real swamp with real alligators, but turns out the students don't actually ride them to school. Either way, what more could I ask for? GEAUX CAJUNS!!!

My Story

One of my biggest fears has always been not being known, being forgotten. Entering college, where there are 20,000+ students on a single campus, it was easy to let this fear control my life. I wanted a community of people, a group of friends, didn't matter who they were or what their lifestyle was, I just wanted to belong. I immediately pledged a sorority, Kappa Delta, and also became involved in my alma mater's Catholic student center and joined a bible study, which is where I first learned about FOCUS. There, I met other college women who were striving for something greater than themselves, and they had this contagious zeal about them that I was so drawn to and kept me coming back.

I became involved with FOCUS early on in my college career, but I still was living in the fear of being forgotten. I threw myself into every leadership position I could get my hands on just so people would know my name. I served on council in Kappa Delta my sophomore/junior year, and then served as president my junior/senior year. I was on retreat teams and lead small groups. I lead bible studies and went to conferences. People knew who I was, but for whatever reason, it wasn't as great as I imagined. I brought all of these titles and achievements, all of these identities, to the Father and to Jesus, wondering if they were proud of me. It wasn't until my last semester of college where the Father revealed just how pleased He was with me.

My last semester of college, I was no longer the president of my sorority, I was no longer on retreat teams or leading small groups, most of my friends were moving onto grad school, and I had no title behind my name. I wasn't Ashton Bourque, President, or Ashton Bourque, Small Group Leader #2, or Ashton Bourque, Future Grad School Attendee. I was just Ashton. I felt like a failure and that I had let Jesus down because I had nothing to bring to Him, but this is where the Father radically loves me. He showed me that no title was necessary, and that frankly He doesn't really care about them. He's proud of me no matter what, He loves me no matter what. He has given me the ultimate identity, His Daughter. I am Ashton Bourque, a Beloved Daughter of the Father.

There is a great need for students to know this is their true identity. With being a Son of Daughter comes great freedom, peace, and true Love. By serving with FOCUS, I can give Jesus the great opportunity to reach his children's hearts and bring them into His Kingdom.

Your Impact

When I answered the call to join FOCUS, I made the decision to rely on the spiritual and financial support of mission partners to help me through this mission. I've been blessed with the most amazing people who have journeyed with me as I serve on campus. If you are interested in partnering with me, please let me know of the best way to reach you and I will schedule an appointment. I'd be honored to share this mission with you.
