Where we serve

We are so happy to say that we'll be staying at George Washington University for our third year with FOCUS, and we're even happier that the newest addition to our team - little Lucy Kaitlyn - will be on mission with us! We have seen God work in incredible ways at GW, and we are so excited to continue to invest in the souls of the students here. Please pray for us!

Our Story

Ben: In many ways, the college campus is the battleground of our culture today. College students are losing their faith, struggling with depression, falling into addiction, and taking their own lives at rates the world has never seen before. It's a place where many feel lost and alone.

That's exactly where I was my sophomore year of college, at the darkest time of my life. I had lost all faith in a God that loved me, and had nowhere to turn. Instead of allowing me to continue isolating myself, however, the FOCUS missionaries on campus kept reaching out to me, listening to me, and loving me unconditionally. At SEEK, the national FOCUS conference in 2015, the love of my friends and the hope of the 10,000 college students there broke through the walls I had put up around me, and God showed me that He doesn't just want my praise, or the parts of me that are clean and polished, He wants everything I have. He wants my mess, my darkness, and my brokenness, because He is a good, good father. I know now that I am His beloved son, and He created me to spend eternity with Him, and it's largely thanks to FOCUS missionaries that I know that.

I long for nothing more than to share with the world the love of Christ. As a full-time missionary, I have to opportunity to share life with college students, leading Bible studies, retreats, mission trips, and whatever God is calling me to! I am so excited for the adventure He has set before me.

Eliza: I’ve never been satisfied with mediocrity. All my life, I’ve pushed myself to settle for nothing less than my best. As an undergraduate at Harvard, I was not alone in that mentality. I’m sure, though, that such an incessant drive to always to do better and to never let myself falter would have consumed me and robbed me of my joy, especially at a place like Harvard. For that reason, I am so grateful that a FOCUS missionary reached out to me during my freshman year of college and simply began a friendship with me. She wanted to learn more about me and listen to what I had to share. She wanted to love me, not because I had something to offer her or because I had reached any level of perfection, but simply because I was worthy of love. Her authentic friendship and investment in me blew me away, and I wanted to know why she lived the way she lived.

As our friendship grew, that missionary invited me into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. I had grown up Catholic, but it wasn’t until she showed me what it was like to truly know Christ that I began to actually live my faith. My life was transformed as I discovered my identity as a daughter of God, and I felt infinitely more joyful and free than I ever had before. I have chosen to become a FOCUS missionary myself because I desire so strongly to invite other college students to experience the peace that comes from the knowledge that you are loved by God Himself. On college campuses plagued by loneliness, depression, substance abuse, and purposelessness, students are thirsting to know the Truth of the Gospel – that they are loved beyond comprehension and made for so much more than this world.

I want to push students to strive for much more than mediocrity, but not just in their studies and extracurriculars. I want to push them to pursue excellence in all things with the knowledge that Christ, their only strength, will take them to heights they never dreamed they could reach. Investing in young people is the way to change the world, and I am so excited to see how God continues to move the hearts and minds of college students through my work with FOCUS.
